I'm a cassowary!
Have you ever wondered what your spirit animal is?
I have, until I saw a documentary about Big Bertha and Crincle Cut
southern cassowaries. My animal alter ego manifested itself in the form of huge
legs with deadly claws, blue skin, red wattles, black hair-like feathers, a casque
on a head and huge, watchful eyes.

Those beautiful animals have totally stolen my heart. By making this comics I would like to share with you my interests in cassowaries’ world and spread some knowledge
about those extraordinary birds.

Cassowaries are beautiful, strong, inteligent birds. They are the second heaviest birds
in the world and they come straight from dinosaurs (they even look like dinosaurs
and they make sounds like dinosaurs!). They can’t fly, but that’s not a problem: instead of flying, they walk gracefully between the rainforest, on their strong legs ended
with deadly claws.
What more, they are a great runners, swimmers and can jump really high.
When threatened, they can be dangerous, but despite their bad reputation, cassowaries are frugivores. Without those beautiful creatures the rainforest would be endangered (cassowaries are even called “forest gardeners”, because thanks to them
a lot of plant species are spread).
It’s not easy to observe a cassowary in nature, because they’re a bit shy.
They are crepuscular animals which means that they are most active during dusk
and dawn. They prefere solitute and mate only in mating season. A female lay usually
3 or 4 eggs and leaves them to their father. In cassowaries’ world males take care
of eggs and chicks alone.
Females are about 25% heavier than males, more dominant and more agressive. Males are delicate and devoted fathers. But females, like Zuza, can have their favourite males whom they start a mating season with.
I hope you enjoyed!
